I (ShaughanLavine) put together this classification fast and without much thought to provide a basis for discussion. There is probably something in it to offend every member of the Department. Within each area, courses are in order by number. My assignment of courses to areas is of necessity somewhat arbitrary, since I know nothing of most of the courses beyond their catalog descriptions. This, after all, is the point of a wiki: if you see something you don't like, change it. I apologize for the long ugly line immediately below each course name. That line populates the list of people who have taught the course. If you move or copy a course, move or copy that line along with it. Note that is is a single line: if you break it into pieces, it will stop working. Remember: The system saves every version of everything, and so you can't break anything. The worst that can happen is that you'll have to ask ShaughanLavine to restore an old version.

The point of the attempt at classifying courses into areas is that it will provide a forum for discussing which areas need more courses, given our present faculty, which need fewer, and which are so thin that that suggests that we need to think about hiring faculty.

Ancient Philosophy Comments

Rachana Kamtekar will be arriving in Fall 2005, and so more courses will be taught in Ancient Philosophy. Julia proposes the following: replace GreekPhilosophy470 and GreekPhilosophy570 with two new course sequences, say, IssuesinGreekPhilosophy4xx , IssuesinGreekPhilosophy5xx , TopicsinGreekPhilosophy4xx , and TopicsinGreekPhilosophy5xx . (The reason for the question marks is that no course description has as yet been filled in.) Julia feels that making the topics of the courses more specific (Hellenistic Philosophy, Ancient Ethics, Ancient Skepticism, and so forth) would result in so many courses that they would wind up not being taught often enough and being dropped from the catalog. That seems sensible to me. In addition, we would need to increase the number of times the ancient courses can be repeated for credit and require approval of the instructor. I have made more specific proposals under the different course descriptions.
